Fiberglass doors are beautiful and durable, but they do have one major drawback: They’re not waterproof. If you want to keep your fiberglass door from getting damaged by weather or water damage, the best option is to refinish it. There are several ways to go about this process, but there are some differences between them all—and some advantages as well!
Find out what kind of substrate you have.
When you’re refinishing a fiberglass door, it’s important to know what kind of substrate you have. Fiberglass panels are made from multiple layers of resin and can only be repaired with new resin “glaze.” If any of these layers are damaged by water or other elements, you can’t just repair them with paint or touch-up sealant. Instead, you need to remove the old glass and restore it with new resin “glaze.”
Inspect the door for any damage.
- Inspect the door for any damage. Check for cracks, chips and dents; loose or damaged screws; loose or damaged hinges; and any other problem areas on your door, such as handles that aren’t working properly.
Remove any loose debris from the door before refinishing.
Before you start, it’s important to remove any loose debris from the door. You can use a vacuum or paint scraper for this. If your door has rust and other loose paint on it, use a power washer to clean off all of that grime and dirt before refinishing.
Polish both sides of the door.
- Use a polishing compound.
- Use a polishing pad. A plastic-based one works best, as it will not scratch the fiberglass surface like other materials might.
- Use an automatic machine to apply and remove waxes, glazes and dyes from your door’s surface while it dries completely before applying another coat of paint
Fill in any nail holes with wood fillers or wood primer.
If you have nail holes in your fiberglass door, fill them with wood filler or wood primer. Wood filler is a quick fix and can be applied with an inexpensive putty knife. It’s also much easier to apply than the more durable wood primer.
Wood primer is a more durable option, but it will take longer to dry than wood filler and may need sanding after completion of your project if not properly sealed with paint or varnish (though this isn’t usually necessary).
Sand smooth, then apply a coat of stain or paint over your new surface.
Now that you’ve finished removing the old finish, it’s time to start applying stain or paint over your new surface. You’ll want a high-quality sandpaper, like 400 grit or finer (the higher the number, the finer). Sand in the direction of your grain for best results—don’t use pressure when sanding!
You can also use a vacuum cleaner with an attachment that catches dust and debris from your work area; this will help keep things clean while you’re working on them.

In order for this process to work properly, there are several steps involved:
- Cleaning the door frame thoroughly so that no rusts or other debris remain on the surface of your fiberglass door. This will ensure that all dirt has been removed before applying any materials used in refinishing your fiberglass door’s frame
